Lexus Has Announced a Twin Turbo V8 in Development for Future Sports Cars
Wonder no more! Lexus droped news that the LC F will use a twin turbo V8, which could also end up in other cars.
In an announcement from Toyota Gazoo Racing regarding their entry in the 24 Hours of Nurburgring next year, we were treated to a little surprise. The car they will use will be a Lexus LC. The engine powering it was the biggest surprise. Lexus is developing a twin turbo V8.
Details about the new twin turbo V8 are yet to be seen. However, the press release did indicate that it would be “destined for use on future road cars such as sports cars.” This could be based off the current 5.0 liter 2UR-GSE V8 in various Lexus models, which currently makes 471 horsepower. Adding a bit of boost to that could put an LC in supercar range. Perhaps an LC F supercar will be in order? We’ve seen spy shots of an LC F prototype already, so now we get to speculate where it will land in the performance car hierarchy.
Consequently, it could be an all new engine from the ground up. Packaging a 5.0 liter twin turbo V8 into something like an IS F would be an engineering nightmare. Developing a new, more compact engined which initially was designed for turbocharging may be a good answer to that problem. At least that’s a theory which could bring back one of our favorite fast sedans.
The press release promised more than just a new engine, as well. Entire structures of future Lexus cars could change, with development of low-weight, high rigidity body structures. Cutting through the air will also be part of the LC program with enhanced aerodynamic components. Matching the body structure will be the suspension, which is also described as being low-weight and high rigidity. High response shock absorbers would pair with lightweight wheels. Vehicle stability and traction control systems, plus performance oriented ABS control will help the driver extract the highest level of performance of these new future road cars.
Lexus takes this motorsport stuff seriously, and through the RC F has seen great success in IMSA. With more international racing on the docket with a flagship sports car, the road-going versions can only benefit. We cant wait for more news!
