New commercial isn’t doing anything to quell folks’ range anxiety.
The battle between Lexus and Tesla appears to be heating up, albeit in a rather indirect way. With a brand new, affordable Model 3 on the way, Tesla is taking aim at existing premium automakers like Lexus. And while you’d probably expect the historically calm luxury brand to brush that off, it looks like they’re taking a totally different route instead.
This latest Lexus hybrid commercial, dubbed “Always Ready,” is a hilarious and obvious jab at Tesla and all other producers of purely electric vehicles. It demonstrates through real-life scenarios how life can be quickly interrupted when battery-powered devices go dead. The fiasco affects everything from electronic boarding passes to the digital gadgets found in the boardroom and the bathroom.
Generating impressive power, however, is clearly where Lexus hybrid models excel. You get many of the benefits of an EV but without the ominous range anxiety. And with Tesla’s Supercharger station coverage still lacking, they’ve got a point, not to mention the fact that current dealer and service station reach is confined mostly to larger U.S. cities.
But there’s one obvious problem with this argument, of course. Many insist that a plug-in hybrid Lexus remains in the works. And if it ever decides to produce an EV, this commercial will undoubtedly serve as an egg-in-the-face moment. But maybe by then, EV stations will be on every corner.
Regardless, it’s still pretty funny to see the normally conservative, high-brow automaker poking fun at the competition. Tesla and EV proponents will undoubtedly get upset and cry foul, of course. But to us, it’s all in good fun.
