Lexus LC 500 Proves Impracticality Can Be a Good Thing

LC 500

New LC ‘will do far more to improve your life than any bathroom remodel.’

Practicality: It’s a nice concept that far too often dominates the automotive shopper’s mind these days. Gone are the days when we bought motor vehicles purely on emotion. No longer do we buy cars just because they look great, ignoring the fact that they can’t seat four adults and carry a few bags of groceries. As a general rule, we’ve become more sophisticated and demanding consumers.

For good reason, obviously. Automakers have spoiled us with incredible technology and feats of engineering. No longer do we have to make compromises – we can literally have everything we want and need in one tidy package. So when Lexus unveiled the production LC 500, it almost felt like a step back in time. Even with its incredibly futuristic looking skin.

Because the coupe kind of is. A throw back to times when people bought cars because they looked good and made them happy. Not because they can haul the kids and their soccer gear all over town. The LC hearkens back to a time when you wanted to go grand touring, relax, and enjoy the scenery. A time when your neighbor cast eyes of pure jealousy upon you every time you backed out of the garage.

And that’s the sort of life changing, confidence boosting, stress relieving tool we need back in our lives. The Portland Press Herald agrees, despite labeling the LC 500 “impractical.” What it is, however, is a “beguilingly beautiful driveway accessory,” that they say “will do far more to improve your life than any bathroom remodel.”

And that’s exactly the kind of car that needs to make a comeback. The LC 500 will make you feel good every time you look at it and drive it. It may not be the fastest car on the market, nor will it lap the Nurburgring in record time. And it most certainly won’t be your car of choice on soccer night. But it will make you think about it, and wish that you were driving it instead of that boring SUV.
