Lexus Structural Blue Raises the Bar on Car’s Exterior Style

By -

Months of tedious production and inspection coupled with 15 years of development give Lexus the bluest blue ever created by man.

Automakers have development some truly stunning paint colors over the years. But in the end, paint is just paint, right? It just covers our car’s surface, adding both protection and character to bodywork. But while most automakers treat paint almost like an afterthought, Lexus is changing the game. That’s right, the company known for over-engineering the heck out of everything is now taking paint to the next level. And Lexus Structural Blue is the future.

Lexus Structural Blue

The origins of this special paint treatment actually began a whopping 15 years ago. Inspired by the Morpho butterfly, Lexus engineers wanted to create a blue color using nature as a blueprint. Amazingly enough, they managed to do so by using materials that contain no blue whatsoever. Yes, the only reason Lexus Structural Blue looks blue at all is because of the interference of light!

Colorless particles are vacuum coated onto transparent film in multiple layers until they take on a blue “appearance” before undergoing extensive inspection. All-in-all, the process takes 12 production steps, 20 quality inspections, and eight months to make enough to cover 300 Lexus LCs. But the results are worth it. While normal automotive blue paint only reflects around 50 percent of incoming light as blue, Lexus Structural Blue reflects 100 percent. It’s quite simply the bluest blue paint ever!

As you might imagine, this incredibly tedious process doesn’t translate to mass production. And in fact, only two Lexus Structural Blue LC coupes are built each day at Motomachi. But those lucky enough to score one have perhaps the most uniquely incredible paint job ever. Lexus Structural Blue glows even in overcast conditions, emitting light and detailed shadows. And, most importantly, proves that Lexus leaves no stone unturned when it comes to engineering an amazing car!
