Lexus Tops U.S. Luxury Market for Second Straight Month
Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Infiniti, and every other luxury brand all had one thing in common last month: they each sold fewer vehicles in the U.S. than Lexus.
That’s right for the second straight month, Lexus topped the luxury car market in the United States with 30,198 deliveries. With 74,221 cars sold in 2016 during the first quarter, Lexus is just off this year’s lux leader, Mercedes-Benz, who have sold 75,769 cars.
The NX and LX’s popularity rose significantly since last month, with increased sales of 25% and 46% respectively. All in all, the strength of the SUV marked was the big difference maker for the Lexus, with a 9.5% monthly increase in the segment. Strong enough to offset the marque’s 14% dip in car sales.
Kevin Tynan, an analyst for Bloomberg posits that SUV sales have been bolstered by fuel efficiency improvements and lower interest rates. He goes on to say that when looking at the luxury segment’s mix, “Truck is holding up much better and I think that’s a fundamental shift in what we’re buying.”
Which is good for Lexus, considering their strength in the SUV market. (If you should need a reminder as to why, just watch the video ode below, which offers a loving slideshow of each model.)
The news wasn’t all good for Lexus, as month over month sales fell 2.8%. Mercedes and BMW also saw month over month decreases, falling 5.9% and 12% respectively.
