LS400 Not the Million-Mile Lexus, But Could Be One Day

Gently driven 1999 LS400 logged just 21,000 miles over two decades, still catches everyone’s attention to this day with clean appearance.

Six years ago, Matt Farrah took possession of a five-owner 1996 LS400 with 897,000 miles on the odometer. The goal? To get it to 1 million miles. Thus, for the remainders of the New ’10s, Farrah and a host of other drivers took on the Herculean task of racking up the miles, reaching the finish line in late February 2019.

This is not such a car. We recently happened upon a 1999 LS400 on Bring a Trailer with just two owners and 21,157 miles on the odometer over the past two decades. Give it enough time and a few willing souls, though, and it, too, could reach such a place in Valhalla.

Ever since it left the showroom floor of a New Jersey dealership in 1999, the LS400 lived with its first owner for 20 years. By the time it was sold to its current owner, the Diamond White Pearl flagship sedan had moved to Texas. Yet, it retains a clean, timeless appearance to this day.

The big secret to such timelessness is, of course, the 4.0-liter 1UZ-FE V8. The durable V8 firmly established Lexus and the LS400 within the luxury game back in the day. Add a five-speed automatic to move the 295 horses to the back 40, and you have an excellent foundation to build a car (and a brand) upon.

Inside, the LS400’s ivory leather seats welcome one and all to the best Lexus had to offer at the end of the millennium. Meanwhile, the CD/cassette stereo with wood trim is the perfect spot for all of your Sarah McLachlan and Mary J. Blige jams. And of course, the dual-zone climate control denies summer’s heat and winter’s chill to complete the total comfort package.

An excellent service history has kept this LS400 in tip-top shape for two decades. The documentation, a trio of keys, and the tools to keep the Lexus out of trouble complete the story. Will the next owner rack up the miles for glory? You never know. Either way, longevity is a good look for this LS400.
