Q3 sales

September and Q3 2022 sales results are mixed for the Toyota and Lexus divisions, are more electrified vehicles the answer?

It is hard to believe but we are now in the fourth quarter of 2022. But before we get all stressed out about holiday shopping and seeing relatives let’s take a look back at the first three quarters. Today Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported U.S. sales for September and Q3. 2022 remains a challenging year for all automakers. Supply chain issues continue wreak havoc on the industry. However, despite the challenges TMNA has had some wins. And while Q3 as a whole was generally down compared to last year, September saw some sales gains. So, perhaps that is an indication that supply chain constraints are starting to ease. The data shows something else interesting. Year-to-date electrified vehicle sales now represent nearly one-quarter of total volume.

“While our teams and dealers continue to face on-going challenges, taking care of our customers and their needs remains a top priority,” said Jack Hollis, executive vice president, Sales, TMNA.  “Through the end of 2022, customers can expect even more electrified options in showrooms from both brands including four new Corolla hybrid grades, the Corolla Cross hybrid, the all-new Toyota Crown with two hybrid options, and the all-new Lexus RX with available hybrid.” Below are some of the highlights for both the Toyota and Lexus divisions in September and Q3.

Toyota Division September Sales

Corolla

Toyota division sales in September totaled 157,332 vehicles. That is up 20.8 percent over September 2021. The biggest gainers were the RAV4 which was up by 50.8 percent, the Camry was up 45.8 percent, and the Corolla was up 32.2 percent over September 2021. All divisions within Toyota were up overall in September. The car division was up 33.9 percent, the SUV division was up 19.3 percent, and the truck division was up 15.5 percent. These are solid sales figures considering the headwinds caused by supply disruptions.

Toyota Division 2022 Q3 Sales

Q3 sales

As strong of a month September was for the Toyota division it could not overcome the lower sales from earlier in the quarter. Toyota division U.S. sales were 458,493 vehicles, down 5.4 percent compared to Q3 last year. Despite the strong September, Toyota Corolla sales are down over 21 percent year to date. Prius sales total just over half as many as last year this time with 27,008 sold year to date compared to 51,038 sold through Q3 last year. Camry sales are down over 50 percent year to date compared to last year. With those big hitters seeing sharp declines it is tough for the overall portfolio to overcome. But the strong September numbers show that hopefully the tide is beginning to turn.

Lexus Division September Sales

The Lexus division did not fair as well as Toyota did in September. Lexus division posted September sales of 21,718 vehicles, down 4.3 percent from 2021. On the positive side was the ES which was up 27 percent. The IS also saw a modest increase of 8.9 percent for the month. Overall, the Lexus car division was up 14.1 percent compared to September 2021. However, the Lexus truck division was down 9.6 percent. And because Lexus sells about three times as many SUVs as cars, the decrease in sales brought the division down overall. The UX was down 50.1 percent, the LX down 35 percent, and the NX down 22.1 percent. While the NX was down overall, the NX Hybrid and plug-in Hybrid saw their best-ever September sales.

With a down September, it will likely not surprise you to learn that Lexus was down overall in Q3 as well. Lexus division reported sales of 67,524 vehicles, down 16.7 percent compared to Q3 2021. Year to date both the Lexus car and truck divisions are down significantly. Year to date Lexus car division sold 53,637 vehicles compared to 62,693 through the first three quarters in 2021. Lexus truck division took an even bigger hit. 144,975 trucks have been sold year to date compared to 176,113 last year. That is a decrease of 18 percent.

Electrified Vehicle Sales

TMNA Electrified vehicles

Toyota is shifting to an all-electric future as we all know. By end of 2022, TMNA will introduce more hybrid vehicle options; Corolla Cross hybrid, the all-new Toyota Crown hybrid, Lexus RX hybrid, plus four new Corolla hybrid grades. That is great news for those waiting for these types of vehicles. But in order for TMNA to turn things around the supply chain issues need to get resolved. Because even the electrified vehicle sales are down in 2022. So far, year to date there have been 378,357 TMNA electrified vehicles sold. That is down 16.3 percent compared to this period in 2021. Let’s see what TMNA can do for the rest of 2022.
