Lexus GX Teaser

After a quick glimpse of the first-ever TX, two images for the new Lexus GX dropped on social media. What do you want to see in these models?

Lexus is having a busy week, folks, dropping not one, but TWO new vehicle teasers. First up, we have the next-generation Lexus GX, which based on previous patent filings, is likely to be called the GX 550. And a little earlier in the week, we got our first glimpse and the all-new TX, which, in many ways, replaces the L variant of the Lexus RX.

As to when the new GX and TX will debut, we can’t say exactly. But based on the way Toyota USA handled teasers for the 2024 Tacoma, which is officially set to be revealed May 19, I would expect the GX and TX to debut in the next few weeks.

Lexus and Toyota full-frame vehicles have long generations and the GX is no exception. The GX 460 debuted all the way back in 2009. And it was powered by one of the smoothest and most reliable naturally aspirated V8s ever made. But now the 460 is done, most likely being replaced by the GX 550 (and possibly a second, hybrid model at some later date).

Based on the vehicles in the lineup, it’s probably a safe bet that the powerplant will be a version of the twin-turbo V6 powering the LS and LX, but in a slightly detuned form (ala the Toyota Tundra SR-5). These V6s aren’t nearly as smooth as the V8s, which takes away from the feeling of Lexus refinement, but the turbos add oodles of low-end torque.

Also, visually speaking, the GX teaser image of the hood reveals very muscular and angular lines and what appears to be a relatively steep windshield angle, giving the whole thing Defender vibes. Looking at the two GX tesaser images, here are a few other reactions —

  • New headlights. Triple-beam headlights are a mainstay of premium Lexus models. And it looks like designers revised the Lexus-swoop daytime running light.
  • Blacked-out grille. The pictured grille is blacked out with no chrome surround, indicating that we’re not looking at a Premium or Luxury trim. Is this some kind of Blackline or F Sport model/trim, or something else?
  • Plastic wheel arches. Combined with the above, not to mention all the splattered mud, it looks like there’s going to be some sort of off-road focused trim or option pack. Something akin to a Toyota TRD or TRD Pro.
  • Flip-up rear window. Looking at the tailgate, you can clearly see a handle under the wiper, indicating that the rear window will open independently of the whole tailgate.
  • New brown? Lexus also appears to be debuting a new, earthy-metallic brown or bronze color.
  • Logo & lights. And, as with all new Lexus models, Lexus continues to use its full name logo and wrap-around rear taillamp design language.

Overall, these are two very promising images and we can’t wait to see more.

Lexus TX

Lexus TX Teaser

Some folks were surprised when the new RX debuted last year lacking a three-row “L” variant. But here’s the reason why. Lexus is rolling out a standalone model, the long-rumored TX. Based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, we expect the TX to offer three rows of seating and a variety of powertrains. We expect a TX 350 with the 2.4L turbo. A 500h (that adds a Direct4 rear e-axle like the RX 500h). And possibly even a 550h+ plug-in hybrid model. Interestingly, while the Grand Highlander offers a Hybrid variant with the same powertrain as the RX 350h, that might not be the case with the TX.

But time will tell. All we can really do now is speculate (we expect the TX to feel very similar to the RX) and react to the teaser image above. A few thoughts —

  • Lexus floating roofline. The signature Lexus floating roofline is here, but much thicker than on any previous model.
  • No chrome. As equipped, this particular TX features only gloss black and paint-matched wheel arches. It looks really clean and elegant and might indicate some sort of F Sport or F Sport Performance model in the lineup.
  • Very similar to the Grand Highlander. The rear quarter panel and sheet metal are tweaked slightly, but the overall appearance is very Grand Highlander.
