Scientific Study Finds Truly Disgusting Things in Lexus LS

Lexus LS Bacteria Test

Watching this Lexus LS get tested for nasty stuff makes us want to spend a weekend scrubbing our cars.

Most automotive enthusiasts share one major thing in common, in spite of their other differences – we all keep our cars clean, especially the interior. Most of us aren’t the types that would leave fast food wrappers or other bits of trash rolling around on our floorboards, and we’re disgusted by those that do. However, we don’t really think about the nasty stuff present in cars that we can’t see, like germs, fluids, and, well, other stuff we don’t want to mention while eating. Turns out, there’s probably a lot of those things present in our older vehicles, as was the case with a Lexus LS, BMW 7-Series, and Mercedes S-Class that Matt Watson of Carwow recently discovered.

On the surface, all of these cars look to be pretty clean inside once Watson removes the various trash that’s scattered around. After that bit of spring cleaning, Watson heads inside to look for the hidden stuff by using some bacterial swab tests, and he narrows down his search area to the 10 most common touch points within the vehicles.

Watson also checks each vehicle for drugs before sending all of the tests out to a lab for an analysis. The results, as one might expect, are pretty wild and rather disgusting. Thankfully, traces of opioids were the only drugs discovered in any of the cars, though it could have been prescribed to a person that previously sat in the S-Class. However, the bacteria test results were far more grim, as was also the case when Watson took a UV light to each interior and found a variety of unknown bodily fluids splattered everywhere.

Perhaps the most shocking part about the whole test, however, is that the steering wheel in the Lexus LS has more bacteria on it than the average toilet seat, including E. coli. The back seat of the S-Class had so much of one potentially harmful bacteria that it overwhelmed the test, as was also the case with the 7-Series.

Watching this sort of thing certainly makes us think twice about buying a used vehicle, of course, but it also makes us want to spend a good weekend scrubbing the heck out of the ones we own now, too.
