Super Bowl XLIX’s Car Commercials
Believe it or not, the Super Bowl’s got a little something for everyone. Excuses to indulge for foodies, football for sports fans, and plenty of funny and touching commercials for everyone else. None of this year’s spots that focused on cars were real knee-slappers, but a few packed an emotional punch. An assortment of the commercials from Super Bowl XLIX, including one from Lexus, are below.
Mercedes-Benz – “Fable”:
The classic race between the tortoise and the hare is a timeless tale of the dangers of hubris. Mercedes-Benz updates it by giving the shell-backed underdog a 503-horsepower Mercedes-AMG GT S. Too bad the company uses an awkward version of a phrase that hasn’t been popular or funny in years. At least the three-point star’s car looks cool.

Toyota – “How Great I Am”:
Back in his heyday, legendary boxer and American icon Muhammad Ali had no problem telling the world how great he was. He also no problem showing the world, either. In Toyota’s 60-second spot, U.S. paralympic team snowboarder Amy Purdy drives the new Camry and demonstrates all the things she can do, such as snowboard, run, and dance, despite being a double-amputee. That’s pretty damn great, if you ask me.

Toyota – “To Be a Dad” (Extended Cut):
There are so many crappy, annoying, meaningless commercials out there. This is not one of them. Too many people don’t have fathers in their lives, but, fortunately, there are plenty who are close with their loving dads. This spot, along with many of the others in this post, will hit you right in the feels.

Nissan – “With Dad”:
A man’s bond with his automobile, race car or street car, is important, but not as important as the one a father shares with his son. Keep your (teary) eyes open for a glimpse of the next Maxima.

Fiat – “Blue Pill”:
Are you hard up for the new Fiat 500X? Something tells me the Italian automaker won’t mind.

Dodge – “Wisdom”:
You can learn a lot being around for more than 100 years, as Dodge has been. Hopefully, once you’ve learned the importance of being honest and when to keep your mouth shut, you’ll be able to master the art of a sick burnout.

BMW – “Newfangled Idea”:
We live in a world that now runs on what used to be a very foreign concept to Katy Couric and Bryant Gumbel: the internet. Those two have gotten the hang of it since the ’90s, but now the BMW i3 is here to confuse them all over again.

Kia – “The Perfect Getaway” (Extended Cut):
Pierce Brosnan’s life on film might have calmed down quite a bit since his 007 days, but at least he gets a 2016 Kia Sorento at the end of this commercial.

Jeep – “Beautiful Lands”:
This land, whether it’s a seldom-seen stretch of American highway or a jungle on the other side of the world, was made for you and me. Jeep wants all of us to see it in a new Renegade.

Lexus – “Make Some Noise”:
This trippy vid featuring the new NX crossover encourages you to be seen and heard. The vehicle’s dramatic styling all but ensures the former. However, the hybrid NX 200t might make the latter a little difficult.
