3. Lexus LS 400

You could argue the LS 400 belongs at the top of this list. It launched the Lexus brand with a better-engineered, more refined car than anything else on the road in 1990. As a result, the Mercedes-Benz S Class looked dated, sterile, and a bit crude. The LS also combined the poshness of a Jaguar XJ with the reliability of a Camry. It’s legendary for its reliability and durability. And it was flat-out cheaper than its competitors.

We tend to take for granted how competent the LS is. It put Lexus on the map and put the company at the top of J.D. Power and Consumer Reports quality surveys. And it immediately defined the Lexus brand as something aspirational.
