2023 Sequoia Inbound??? Toyota Teases ‘Next Big’ SUV!

Toyota Next Big SUV Teaser
We’re supposed to see the 2023 Sequoia soon, but do the teaser image’s proportions hint at something a little smaller? What do you think?

Not much hard news to report, but Toyota rolled out a teaser image for its “next big”  SUV this morning, making us wonder if what we’re seeing is the long-rumored 2023 Sequoia refresh or perhaps even the return of the Land Cruiser to the United States (more on this in a moment). Here’s what Toyota had to say:

Something big is coming to the Toyota SUV lineup. A clear picture will come into view soon. Stay tuned.

And now for some speculation…

Taking a look at the teaser image, our first thought is 2023 Toyota Sequoia. As MotorTrend reported last fall, we expect to see a new Sequoia for the 2023 model year, based largely on the 2022 Toyota Tundra, but with an independent rear suspension. When this happens, the new Sequoia will sport all of the new features and updates, including the i-Force 3.5-L twin-turbo V-6 making 389 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. And if we’re lucky, we’ll also see the hybrid i-Force Max option making 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque. (Huzzah!)

But comparing the teaser image to the 2022 Sequoia, is there enough room behind the rear passenger door for a Sequoia-sized third-row seat? Perhaps, without the Land Cruiser, the third-generation Sequoia won’t be as large as the second. Still, it looks to be more LX 600 in size.

Speaking of which, the SUV teaser does have a lot of LX 600 DNA in its styling, a design trend that can be found on almost every Toyota and Lexus SUV and crossover. But the rear window shape doesn’t match the LX 600. Nor do the proportions line up with the international Land Cruiser 300, which is much boxier. So we can probably table the Land Cruiser’s North American return.

All hail the new Sequoia!
