Toyota Tundra Shows Us Why the Right Suspension Makes a World of Difference Off-Road

Second-Gen Toyota Tundra

A before and after video shows the amazing difference a set of coilovers made on this Toyota Tundra.

With off-roading exploding in popularity in recent years, even those that own basic, run-of-the-mill pickups are seeking out modifications to make them more capable in that regard. As a result, the aftermarket has exploded, and there are quite literally so many options out there that it can be hard to choose the right parts. This is particularly true of coilovers, as there are many different brands making a host of different types – some obviously far superior to others. That’s seemingly true of the Bilstein 8100, as we can see in this video from Wheel Every Weekend and their second-generation Toyota Tundra.

Here, we can see a short clip of this Toyota Tundra driving over some seriously bumpy terrain, first with the stock “off-road” suspension. Even though it’s supposed to be tuned for such activities, the stock pickup looks incredibly rough going over this bumpy stretch, bouncing all over the place as if it has hydraulics underneath. It’s not only uncomfortable, but not exactly great for the rest of the truck’s bits and pieces, either.

Following the installation of Bilstein 8100 coilovers, however, the Tundra is a completely different animal. The owner is able to drive across the same stretch of dirt at a much higher speed as it soaks up all the bumps, making for a pretty darn smooth ride over a decidedly rough surface. It’s truly a night and day difference, one made with a fairly simply swap that’s also cost effective, particularly for those that do a little off-roading every now and then.

The Bilstein 8100 is indeed a major upgrade over any stock coilover, a position sensitive damper with a reservoir that’s inspired by motorsports applications. These coilovers feature what Bilstein calls “infinite flow” bypass adjustment, which allows for finite, incremental adjustments of rebound and compression. They’re also a direct bolt-on for these trucks, which makes them a pretty easy compelling upgrade, as we can see here in action.
