Of course, Toyota wants us all to spend time inside of its vehicles. However, it also wants us to spend time outdoors, whether that means fishing for bass or camping.

Toyota’s even willing to supply the equipment needed to enjoy some time with Mother Nature. In the press release below, it states, “From June 2 to August 3, 2015, customers purchasing a new 2015 Special Edition Toyota Tundra in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma and Texas will receive approximately $1,000 worth of Bass Pro Shops camping gear to use during Tundra Summer Camp.” The SE Tundra comes with a 20-inch wheel and tire upgrade, running boards, an exhaust tip finisher, and carpet floor mats, among other features. You can equip it with a 5.7-liter V8, which generates 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, to pull a boat, ATV, UTV, or camper.

The Tundra Summer Camp experience will be a part of Bass Pro Shops’ Family Summer Camp. Every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday from June 27 until July 26, families can learn the basics of camping, fishing, archery, and hunting in free workshops led by outdoors professionals at Bass Pro Shops’ stores.

Throughout Toyota’s Tundra Summer Camp, the automaker will donate camping gear and money that will allow the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to “provide scholarships to non-profit and municipal partners of TPWD’s ‘Texas Outdoor Family’ program.” That teaches families how to do such things as set up a tent, cook outdoors, and build a campfire; one-night workshop prices start at $65 and the TPWD provides all of the necessary equipment and a campsite with nearby restrooms.

Those scholarships will give organizations such as Houston’s Parks and Recreation Department and The Woods Project, which provides wilderness education and exploration experiences to disadvantaged kids, the ability to teach children and families about the wonders and pleasures of nature.

For us, it is a testament to the strength of the partnership between Gulf States Toyota and TPWD,” said Carter Smith, TPWD executive director. “It is because of their generous support that we are able to offer so many great programs that allow Texas families to enjoy the outdoors and help conserve the wild places and wild things that mean so much to our great state.”

With a new Toyota truck and top-of-the-line camping gear in the bed, the great outdoors calls and Toyota is helping families get ready. Derek Shiekhi's father raised him on cars. As a boy, Derek accompanied his dad as he bought classics such as post-WWII GM trucks and early Ford Mustang convertibles.

After loving cars for years and getting a bachelor's degree in Business Management, Derek decided to get an associate degree in journalism. His networking put him in contact with the editor of the Austin-American Statesman newspaper, who hired him to write freelance about automotive culture and events in Austin, Texas in 2013. One particular story led to him getting a certificate for learning the foundations of road racing.

While watching TV with his parents one fateful evening, he saw a commercial that changed his life. In it, Jeep touted the Wrangler as the Texas Auto Writers Association's "SUV of Texas." Derek knew he had to join the organization if he was going to advance as an automotive writer. He joined the Texas Auto Writers Association (TAWA) in 2014 and was fortunate to meet several nice people who connected him to the representatives of several automakers and the people who could give him access to press vehicles (the first one he ever got the keys to was a Lexus LX 570). He's now a regular at TAWA's two main events: the Texas Auto Roundup in the spring and the Texas Truck Rodeo in the fall.

Over the past several years, Derek has learned how to drive off-road in various four-wheel-drive SUVs (he even camped out for two nights in a Land Rover), and driven around various tracks in hot hatches, muscle cars, and exotics. Several of his pieces, including his article about the 2015 Ford F-150 being crowned TAWA's 2014 "Truck of Texas" and his review of the Alfa Romeo 4C Spider, have won awards in TAWA's annual Excellence in Craft Competition. Last year, his JK Forum profile of Wagonmaster, a business that restores Jeep Wagoneers, won prizes in TAWA’s signature writing contest and its pickup- and SUV-focused Texas Truck Invitational.

In addition to writing for a variety of Internet Brands sites, including JK Forum and Ford Truck Enthusiasts, Derek also contributes to other outlets. He started There Will Be Cars on Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube to get even more automotive content out to fellow enthusiasts.
