How-To Tuesday: Check Your Tire Tread Before You Wreck Yourself
Do you have older tires? Do you check their tread on occasion for signs of wear and tear? Do you know what those signs are? Do you like gladiator films?
If you said yes or no to any of those questions, then you’ll benefit from this week’s How-To Tuesday article, aptly titled “Lexus: How to Check Your Tire Tread.” Beyond the perfect title, the article shows you how to identify bald or thinning tires easily and cheaply. And we’re talking about a penny here, folks.
All you have to do is place your penny in various tread grooves around the tire, with Honest Abe’s prominent forehead facing you. If you see his whole noggin, that means your tread depth is less than 2/32nds of an inch. Which means its time to get yourself to your local Discount Tire Center.
Or if you’re big time and you only have a quarter, then you can use that too. Just know that if the thread touches George Washington’s head, there’s at least 4/32nds inch of tread left on the old shoes.
Or best yet, if you want to get a more accurate measure, and you’re baller enough to afford four bucks for a proper tire tread gauge, than this week’s article also lays out that six-step approach. And they’re about the easiest steps we’ve encountered on any How-To Tuesday yet. So what are you waiting for?
