How-To Tuesday: Windshield Wiper Troubleshooting and Repair

Do your windshield wipers have a hard time remembering where their home is? Could be they’re improperly adjusted. But instead of paying big money at the dealership to diagnose the problem and get it fixed, why not just do it yourself?

If you own a Lexus IS, ES, GS, or RX between the 2005 and 2013 model years, today’s How-To Tuesday article will help you do just that. And the best part is that most of the time, it’s an easy fix. Unless of course you have to replace the motor.

But let’s troubleshoot before we arrive at that expensive conclusion. First off, if you’re noticing that your wipers aren’t “parking” where they are usually stowed, or if they’re erratic, or not working in tandem, then you may just have an adjustment problem.

If that’s the case, then it’s a fairly easy fix. Just remove the cap over the wiper arm nut, set the wiper arm into the right position, lubricate the linkages, and reassemble. It’s a bit more complicated than all that, but that’s what the article is there for, to walk you through the process step-by-step. And there’s also a helpful corresponding video as well.
