Watch Artisans Expertly Assemble the Lexus LC
The details at Lexus’ Motomachi plant are just as stunning as the car that they build there.
If you want to produce highly detailed cars of exquisite quality, you build them in highly detailed factories of exquisite quality. We already know that Lexus’ attention to detail spans every aspect of the company. But now we’ve got a nifty inside look at just how detailed their manufacturing process is. Because the automaker has graced us with some beautiful shots of the Lexus LS moving through production at the Motomachi plant in Aichi, Japan.
It is here, in the birthplace of the LFA, that Lexus’ most skilled craftsmen, the Takumi, piece together the brand’s latest halo car. Many of whom also pieced together the LFA. Since then, the plant has been retooled for the LC, and new technologies have been introduced. But many of the processes, such as Resin Transfer Molding of the carbon fiber panels, remains the same.
Some changes have taken place since the last LFA rolled off the line, however. Final assembly now takes place in an all-white environment, which is said to aid concentration. And obviously, make any spec of dirt immediately visible. Each assembly line worker now has 20 minutes to complete each task. This ensures each job is completed to Lexus’ lofty standards.
Following assembly, every Lexus LC passes through a room loaded with glass and LED lighting for an intensive inspection. Another room, laden with thick glass, allows engineers to tune the exhaust and engine notes to perfection. If it all seems a bit extreme, that’s because it is. But these days, it takes an extreme process to produce a quality product. And that’s something Lexus has down to a science.
