Lexus LFA Nürburgring Edition Laps Nordschleife in 7:14
Posted by krew on September 2nd, 2011
Some significant news broke today on Twitter — according to EVO writer Chris Harris & Lexus Europe, Lexus driver Akira Iida posted a 7:14 lap time of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a LFA Nürburgring Edition — good enough for either the fourth or fifth all-time fastest lap on the famed German track in a production vehicle (the exact time has yet to be announced). Even more impressive, regardless of milliseconds, this is the fastest lap ever by a mainstream manufacturer.
More on this story as it develops, but in the meantime, here’s another video of Iida-san piloting the LFA around the Nürburgring with a passenger:

Now just imagine shaving :22 off this lap — absolutely amazing achievement.

We have been discussing it in the other "Nurburgring" thread, but this is such a huge news, it is deserving of its own thread.
All of internet is buzzing with the news of this spectacular achievement by Lexus. Just goes to show, nothing builds hype better than the good ol' fashioned numbers.
The video of the 7:14 blasting through the track is going to be a treat to watch. Akira Iida is my hero.

^^^ This is a great achievement! I wasn't very fond of the LFA at first, but it really grew on me a few months ago. Cant wait for the record breaking video to surface.

Akira Iida confirming to a passenger that the car is running on OEM street tires [Potenza RE70 street tires]:

At 7:08,
Passenger: "is this on racing slick tires?"
Iida: "No, it is on completely normal stock road tires".
Passenger: "My God, it is unbelievable"

Despite the haters wanting to hate, the hype on the internet regarding this is just unbelievable. Just goes to show, when you want to show what you have achieved, numbers do all the talking. Subjective experiences are great and talk to the visceral sense of the person driving it, but no one can ever deny a factual evidence like numbers no matter how much they hate a car.
I wish they had launched the standard LFA in exactly the same way they did the Nurburgring.

I only wish they had given the standard edition the same type of launch they give to Nurburgring edition and also had given the standard LFA these same high-grip RE70 Potenza tires. Most journalists love the grip the Nurburgring edition has. They have a hard time believing they are full street tires and not R compounds.

LFA’s Ring Result Confirmed: 7:14.64

After checking the telemetry, and posing for a group shot, it’s official: The Lexus Nürburgring-enhanced LFA did the full 20.8 kilometers of the Nürburgring Nordschleife in seven minutes, 14.64 seconds. That’s a hair better than the Donkervoort D8 RS, which completed a 200 meter shorter course in 7:14.89 – 5 years ago. It is also the best time amongst the bona-fide production models. Better than the Nissan GT-R (7 min 24 sec), better than the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 (7 minutes 19 sec), better than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (7 minutes 18 seconds).
Still, it doesn’t take the Lexus all the way to the top of the production league. In front of it are three more “production” cars. Two Radicals (6:48 and 6:55) and one Gumpert Apollo that had rounded the Ring in 7:11.57. All not necessarily mass market cars, but the LFA isn’t either:
Of the plain vanilla LFA, only 500 are built. The record breaking LFA Nürburgring-Edition is produced 50 times. However, it is street legal, even under strict German rules. The red “Überführungsnummer” (dealer or temporary tag) from Cologne (denoted by the “K” in front) attests to that.
Be it as it may, it is a great win, and it will most likely lead to increased tinkering, especially in Zuffenhausen. Being passed by a car nobody ever heard of is one thing. But by a Lexus?
“Ja, was bilden die sich denn ein, die Japaner!”
PS: Bloggers, please don’t try to impress your readers with “bridge to gantry.” As the authority on the topic, bridgetogantry.com, explains:
“After exiting the carpark at ‘C’ on the map above, drive under the Bridge (Antoniusbuche) at ‘B’. From here it’s 19.1km to the Gantry.”
Bridge to gantry is for tourist days. The full lap is 20.8 kilometers. And here is the video of the full 20.8 kilometers.

The fact that they chose to run the full 20.8km and still managed a 7:14.6 is proof at how special the LFA is. I hope those that ignored this car will finally give it the respect it has earned. Awesome!
