Question: RX450H tyre wear too soon
Hi,
I recent bought a 2010 rx450h with 51000KMs from local Lexus dealer. The current tyre is BridgeStone 235/55/R19 and the
depth is just abt 3mm.
Before this purchase, the sales told me the normal life time of a new set of tyres is abt 40000-60000kms(25000-
37500miles). I believe this because this is my actual experience. And I also asked my fd, a vehicle specialist with more
than 10 yrs exp, he also says that 40000-60000km(25000-37500miles) is normal at my area if the car has been treated
properly.
Then before I paid for the vehicle I got, I requested a new set of tyres as the condition. The dealer told me the
vehicle was still with the original tyre (BridgeStone) according to the system so they could replace a new set for me.
After purchase the dealer told me this is the 2nd set of new BridgeStone 235/55/R19 tyres for this vehicle already. So
they cannot replace a new set of tyres for me.
The rx450h I bought has full service history at local dealer. I also had test-drive on that and I think it is under good
condition.
Therefore it means that the original tyre of RX450H can only last for less than 30000kms! And it happened for 2 sets of
tyres!
Is the tyre wear normal or I just met a tricky dealer?
I was confident with the Lexus technology. But if say that less than 30000kms(18000miles) is the normal tyre wear then
it just makes me so disappointed and unhappy of the dealer.

Ray1628, congrats on your RX and welcome to CL. Was your 450h purchased CPO? The dealer would have to change the tires. If not, you're on your own. Bridgestone is maybe second out of the three brands available on the RX. Michelins are the most popular and offer better tread life. Others like myself have gone with Pirellis. Take a look at this thread for some reviews.
I've never been impressed with the wear on OE tires. It's like Lexus puts starter tires on the RX. But instead of getting upset, I take the opportunity to find a much better tire. Check around for deals and rebates. There's bound to be a few out there.

Ray, you have a great car. Sorry if the tires you got are not the best available. But tire wear is subjective to the driver and the conditions of his routes. If two different people buy the same car but drive differently on different routes, one is likely to get several thousand more miles than the other.
Like Anita said, they come with different brands. She's liking the Pirelli's on her car (she changed to them), and many of us received the Michelin's (like myself) and liked them well enough to stay with them when time to change.
And your car may need a complete alinement. Potted roads or driving fast over speed bumps has a tendency to knock them out. That could be history you may never know about. Too much or too little pressure can also cause premature wear.

Take a look at the UTQG number on the tire. It is tire's wear rating in percent over 8,000 mile course. Multiply that number by 8,000 miles and divide by 100 and you will get the expected life of the tire.
I believe OEM Bridgestones are rated at 260, therefore they are expected to wear out in 20K miles or 33K KM. That is pretty poor. My high performance summer tires on the IS have a better rating.
This has nothing to do with Lexus or their technology - they didn't make the tire. Most manufacturers put poor tires on their vehicles from the factory. Call that cost savings. I'm sure they get kickbacks from tiremakers, since people tend to stick with the same brand and model as OEM.
However, if your dealer promised you a new set of tires, keep on at it. Call the corporate (800-25LEXUS) and explain your situation. They may just give you a new set.

All of the CPO or Manufacturer or Dealer Tires are pretty Bad. They usually Wear out around 30k Miles or less. Go buy some Michelin or so. They last much longer
