Put your hand into a plastic sandwich bag and rub gently over your paint. If it doesn't feel perfectly smooth then use the clay first to remove the contaminants.

Go for the clay! I am also new to the level of detailing suggested in this forum & I recently clayed my SC430 that had 6K miles. I could run my hand over the car, after washing with Dawn to strip off all wax, and could feel many contaminants at various spots prior to claying.

Daddy O posted a link to a video that you can download on using Mothers Clay Kit. The key was to only use very light pressure, moving the clay back & forth ( not in a circular pattern ) and most importantly keeping the surface well lubed ( I used a light mixture of Zaino car wash ). Pick out any obvious contaminants removed to the clay. Remember to keep folding and molding the clay as you go.

You can cut up the clay bar in two or three pieces because if you drop the clay on the ground throw it away and get out another piece.

Then I washed with Dawn again to remove the clay residue & then another wash with Z-7 (Zaino's car wash ).

You can also find lots of help in the Learning area at: http://www.autopia.org

Hope this helps!

I used Mothers claybar kit also. It removed all the waters spots. You cant feel thme when you run your hand over them and they needed a 2nd going over to get them out.

The hardest part to remove anything with a clay bar is the area right around the washer thingys on the hood. I still have water spots their that I need to remove. Other than that my black GS is like glass.
