An old micro-fiber moistened with water is good for light cleaning. Also be careful when using a strong cleaner like Simple Green as it can stain aluminum if not removed promptly and completely.
If you use a protectant after cleaning, be sure not to use anything that leaves an oily, non-drying coating as it will attract and hold dust, dirt and grime.

I too recommend a moist MF towel to wipe away dirt. You can also use a stiff brush to dust off nooks and crannies. Our cars are so dependent on electronics that I would avoid a stream of water at all costs. Also, avoid coatings or chemicals that attract dust (WD40, silicon lubricants, Armorall, etc.). And whatever you do, don't reach for perfection. Clean is good enough.
