I don't have much experience with rust (never had any) but I would think to keep it from spreading just keep it waxed over, always. After each wash I would wax over that area just to keep it sealed. Don't know if it works, but thats what I would try (just my .02). I hope it all works out until you get it repainted!

Boy that looks nasty. I suggest you sand the rusted area. If necessary apply some body filler. Mask the rusted area and paint a coat of primer (cost $5.00). Get some color matched spray (not brush touchup type) paint (cost $20) and put on some light coats of paint on the masked area. Finally put on a couple of clear coat. It will look alot better and will help stop the rusted area from spreading. Of course unless you remove the chrome window trim you will not be able to get to any rust below the trim strip.

Rust is like cancer, you have to get rid of it or it just keeps spreading. You might have to reskin the door, or just get a new door because of the location, water may have been getting inside the door.I would seek professional help on this one.

+1 with SC Dave.

Rust starts from the inside out...if it's that bad already, it's probably your best bet to replace the door.

If the door is that bad what is the rest of the car look like. Id jump under the car and through the car and search for other spots. If its in a spot like that there has to be more somewhere. I found out with my '66 chevy truck, rust is like roaches, if you see one, there has to be more somewhere.
As far as dealing with the rust, they make a rust convertor. You just use like a stiff brush to knock off the heave rust and apply the rust convertor. I think you let it sit over knight and it convers the rust chemicly and actually acts like a primer. It will normally turn black and you can just paint over it.

For now until you have the money to replace the door or have it repainted just sand out all the rust and go over it with a primer to seal it.
