Default Detail Black Onyx

I have read a lot of threads about detailing black but I wanted to know if I have a 98 GS that has no clearcoat should I use different steps/products with a PC then the ones I have read about in general regarding cleaning/polishing/waxing?

Thanks,
Carmen

Hi Carmen, you can use the same rubbing compounds (if necessary) and polishes that any others would use on basecoat/clearcoat. The single stage paint on your car is the SAME paint chemically (urethane enamel) as the paint on clearcoated cars, it's only that it's pigmented for you and our topcoat is non-pigmented. The same polishes will work for each. Remember though, start with something fine/gentle if you can.

Years ago, single stage was either lacquer, acrylic lacquer, or acrylic enamel, and some of those did require a slightly different approach as far as abrasives go, but today...no. Use the same products you read about here and you'll be fine.

Let us know what you end up with... I'm planning to take delivery soon on a BO IS350.. obviously I'm a bit nervous that everything is done properly.

The porter cable will suffice, with the normal products used. DO NOT use a rotary Buffer/polisher. only orbital. a rotary doesnt react to resistance, if you put too much pressure, the speed that the disc spins doesnt slow, you will burn THROUGH the paint in seconds.

the PC is an orbital, and it will be fine, just dont sit in one spot too long and use PLENTY of wax.

Claybar afterwards. i found a meguiars claybar kit for $8.00 at autozone.

Clay your car after a wash, but before you polish and wax.

There's no point in polishing paint contaminants now, is there?
