Default Documenting my luck with this approach

Short story - I was looking at houses at night when it happened to be pouring rain. As I backed out of the unfamiliar driveway, I managed to do an incredible sideswipe on my car against a jagged metal mailbox. Two body shops I checked want $2000 to repair (including dent removal). So, I'm at the point of saying "what the hell". I'm going to give this a shot and if I destroy it - I'll just pay to get the real fix.

So, here are 3 pics. The first is the original scratch after washing it off. The second is after using an orbital buffer and Maguires Ultimate Compound. The third is where I have attempted to put some black paint on the first couple inches of the scratch. I have the blob and I've sanded it with 3M 3000 and buffed out the scratches.

As you can tell - it's still very bumpy. I'm assuming I need to sand more aggressively to level it out, but I'm still a bit scared. Not sure if the original poster still reads this, but I'm wondering if anyone can encourage me to sand a little more aggressively. I'm thinking I'll go with Meguiar's Unigrit 2500... any advice?

This is a great DIY on paint chip repair. I've asked many, many independent detailer's about this process to get the paint chip level and as least noticeable as possible. I have suggested this method and was looked at like I was crazy, and asked smart a** remarks such as "Are you a professional detailer?". I was looking for conformation that this would work. BIG THANK YOU!!
