well, normally i use engine degreaser on those spots where water won't get it off. after i spray those parts i spray down the whole engine with water but make sure you don't accidentally spray down any of the electrical parts.

I go over mine with some engine degreaser, work it in with a stiff brush in places where water won't get to and hit it lightly with a high pressure hose. I don't seem to have any problems with this method, and this is with my HID ballasts pretty much exposed and they've never had a problem with this method either.

My friend has a presure washer and some kind of black coating stuff that he uses after on his Z06 so I do the same. I'll try to get some pictures up sometime this week After I wash it and apply that stuff I go over the engine bay everytime I wash the car itself with Black Magic Rubber and Plastic cleaner/shiner.

I cover all the electrical components with plastic bags. I use Orange Blast diluted 1:1 and spray it on a warm (but not hot) engine. Let it sit for a few minutes then spray it off with a hose using a broad flat fan spray. If you have any stubborn areas agitate with a brush. I follow up with my air compressor and thoroughly blow off any standing water. Take care to rinse any of this solution off your paint if some splashes. I immediately restart the car and let it run for a few minutes to generate some heat to aid in drying. I would not use a power washer as this can force water into areas you don't want to get wet. Be aware that some cleaner products will stain aluminum if not removed promptly.
To give the engine bay the new look I use a product called CD/2 Engine Detailer. This is an acryllic based spray that dries glossy and hard. It leaves no oily residue to attract and hold dust and grime so the engine compartment stays clean a long time.
Here is a 16 year old engine compartment after this treatment.

the only problem with water and the SC is the fact that the spark plug holes fill with water when you sprey down the motor. no way arround it. other than that, its a good.
