Default removing hard to remove stains?

I have this weird stain on my front passenger door... it's like this sticky black goo... I have no idea where it came from. It comes off clean when I pick it with my nail, but it would take forever to clean it all off, and I don't want to risk scratching the paint from doing that too much. Does anyone know of a good technique to remove tough stains?

YEs it will scratch!

use a clay bar to rub it off. it is like a giant eraser for paint.

If it's a goo then use WD40. I had some gum or tar, and it did the trick.

Had some large speckles of tar on my SAAB, just used a cloth with some boiling water, came off flawlessly.
