We have heavy salting on our roads Dec.-April,
and I'm looking for an easy way to keep the
gorgeous black paint job clean without causing
any damage due to near-weekly washing.
What is the recommended paint care for a
1997 LS 400 in these conditions? Also, any
particular things to avoid (brushless car
washes, etc.)?
Thanks!

It will be great to see if anyone has a magic bullet for you. I don't think there is one. Moved out from Chicago a long time ago to sunny Cal and don't have to contend with your problem. To make a long story short I don't think there is an easy way to keep your paint in good shape short of a garage and locking your keys up in winter. Best advice is to keep a good layer of protectant on the paint and don't let the salt sit on it. My experience from the good old days is that the salt on the under side is more damaging than the top side so don't forget to spray down as much of the underside and suspension as you can. Generally I avoid all car washes (I have the 2k1 GS very very very very dark blue). Either try to hand wash it yourself or find someone who does, usually a detailer. Hope someone has easier advice.
