The best answer is to ask the paintshop who did the job. Failing that info, I'd wait a month minimum. You can use a product like Meguiar's #80 Speed Glaze to offer some protection and not interfere with the curing of the paint in the meantime.

I agree. I'd ask the shop that did the painting.
I just had the front end of my car painted and my shop told me to wait 2-3 weeks before waxing, depending on the weather, and also depending on the type of wax. If the weather is sunny and hot, the length of time you need to wait is less as the out gassing will occur more rapidly at higher temperatures. And if you are using a true wax as opposed to a sealant then the paint can still breathe through it.
Also, it makes a big difference if the paint is baked or not after being sprayed.
Bottom line: go by the recommendations of the shop that did your painting.

Generally, the rule of thumb is 30-90 days. The time depends on which type of paint was applied and how it was cured. Some are air dried, some are put under heat lights and some are baked. In the past, as Jim stated, I have used a glaze to help protect the surface while the paint cures.

Im so glad I read this thread... I was planning on getting a bumper repaint and then immediately detailing the outside of the car. I can't imagine what I might have done to the new paint job....

^ You still might be able to accomplish that. Most body shops bake the finish, and even apply a wax before turning over the car. The key thing is to ask about their process. You won't be able to do any polishing, but with fresh paint & body work there shouldn't be a need.
