My friend gave me this can of Dupli-color Engine Enamel of what appears to be clear coat. If I use this stuff, question is, will it make the engine bay look better? Is it safe to use? Is it a bad idea to use it?

I would NOT apply any type of enamle paint to my engine bay. There are a lot of other ways to detail the engine compartment. There is a simple procedure that is listed on one of the lincoln forums. I will look it up and post the link for you. The procedure is simple and it works great.

Just to add a few points to the article.
1) It may be required for you to take a soft bristle brush or sponge to aditate any stubborn dirt that does not come off on the first try.
2) I am not a big Armor All fan and I substitute it with Vroom tire shine as it appears to last much longer and provides a better shine
