What if I don't use the adhesion promoter on the housings? I used the promoter for my center caps and after applying the Tamiya paint, the results were more of a glossy black instead of the BP.

I think the promoter darkened the chrome so it effected the ending result.....maybe I sprayed too much promoter? Do you think the PS-31 will hold up okay on the housings without the promoter and just clear coat?

no idea.
i normally do mine in multiple stages, and stop when the wet result is ~1-2 stages LIGHTER than what i want my final product to be. its easy to darken a piece, but to lighten it you have to start over.

Ok^..good point...but now I am torn between not using promoter or using it...If the PS-31 is made to bond with plastic then it should hold up okay and the housings are protected from elements....Just thinking out loud here.....

Question While I'm spraying.............

Has anyone taken the same route with the license frame? The black pearl frame is much more than the $10 I can get a chrome frame for. And since I have the Tamiya paint, might as well save some more cash, huh? Anyone done this?

If it's metal.....it will probably not work out. Plastic, go for it...it will look good.

I think PureDrifter mentioned this before but the Tamiya paint is specifically made to stick to plastic so IDK if it can bond to metal.

Well, it has been about 4 months since I painted my front emblem.

It has gone through some winter weather and to the slopes. It's pretty chipped up and looking like crap. So, this time around I scraped off the remaining tamiya paint with a puddy knife and slightly sanded the chrome with 1500 grit.

This time I used adhesive promoter. and of course clear coat.

The results looked much better and the BP effect was clearly still there even though I lightly sanded the chrome. It still has that shine and matches my OEM BP rear emblems.

I will post pics soon.

I also used the Tamiya paint to tint my headlight turn reflectors and it came out really nice. I removed the headlights, split it open, painted the chrome housings satin black and the turn reflector BP.

Pics to come.......

As promised here is a pic after I re-painted the front emblem. Still a close look to my OEM BP rear emblems. I also used promoter this time around. Still has a shine effect after slightly sanding with a 1400 grit.

I've been wanting to use the Tamiya PS-31 for my headlight housings but decided to just tint my turn signals with the PS-31. I was afraid I didn't have enough Tamiya for all of my housings and wasn't sure how it would apply. So, I used black satin Krylon for housings and Tamiya for turn signals and everything turned out great! I was glad I went this route because I used about 2.5 cans of PS-31 to get to the color I want for just 2 turn signals.

Here's the paint for reference:

This was the only pic I took while painting the signals. Wish I had more. From this pic...there was about 3 or 4 more coats applied. I wanted the signals to be dark so that nothing can be seen through.

Finished project. The signals blended in nicely with the satin black.

Here's how it looks with the signals turned on.
