Question Cleaning the engine bay...

What type cleaners do u guys use to clean ur engines? I've heard that products like Simple Green, etc. are too harsh for our engine (covers, etc.) and im not sure what else to use. I ve tried soap and water but it doesn't really do much. I would like to get that new, shiny look. Any suggestions?

On the black plastic parts I use Zaino #6 (Ultra Clean). It works well, wipe it on and wipe it off. Leaves no sticky residue to hold dust and is actually anti-static. I use an old crappy rag which is scrificed for the engine wipe down. After that chore the rag is gone. I would be very cautious about using water or steam sprays of any type on our engines. The deep dead-ended spark plug wells will hold water and cause issues I am sure.

Water if definately out. When I first got my SC400, I completely detailed it. The engine bay was sooo clean... Then all of a sudden I ran so rough it sounded like a mustang. To make a long story short, $600 -- new distributor caps, 8 plugs + Wires @ the lexus dealership... Shoulda looked at the spark plug wells before I sprayed the engine down.

I'm just a little careful with the hose, and leave the car running when its at normal operating temps... Any limited amounts of water around the plugs would be vaporized by the heat of the block. Drive the car immediately afterwards for a while. Ordinary Palmolive dishwashing liquid. Good for the hands=good for the Lexus.

There is a product called S-02 I believe. It is avaialble at motorcycle shops, especially Harley Davidson. You spray it on the entire engine and then wash it off with water. The stuff works great and my engine looks new now. Be careful though, my engine is definetely running rough and I just ordered all the tune up parts mentioned above. Well mine needed these anyway.
