Default best way to wash the underbody....for a NE car

just bought a car in Chicago with only 1800 miles that was driven in the snow/salt/chemicals.

is a simple rinse (with a hose spraying underneath) sufficient or should a soap/detergent be used to neutralize/remove this stuff?

I was thinking of taking it to a handwash place with underbody wash capability....they claim "underbody wash" "underbody rust shield" -- only $11 total.

thanks for your help

I've always heard that rinsing it with a hose (regularly) when driven on salt is fine.

Here is a quote from such a resource:

Start with hosing under the engine and transmission and then work your way out to the fenders and wheels. Pay particular attention to cracks and crevices where corrosive salt or debris can collect. Brushing unusually heavy deposits can help loosen them up. For even greater undercarriage access, a set of drive-on ramps or jack and jack stands can give you a better shot with the hose. Always be safe, and keep it clean.

Try a soaker hose. Drive the car over it and turn it on. Move the hose around occasionally to get everywhere

I have one of those brushes that you can hook your hose into. I took the brush off and it made a slight 90 degree curve good enough to get a angle to spray the bottom.

Take it to your self service bays and pressure wash the crap out of it....literally. I have always wanted to get a hold of a lift so I can just start spraying away after getting it in the air.

I've used the handwash with underbody wash that you stated and it works pretty good. I would wash it occasionally during the winter, and come spring time, get a nice detail on it.
