Default What the damage?

Quite some time ago I blew a tire on the the highway at 80MPH. The tire shredded up and metal threads slapped the heck out of the side of my car.
As you can see lot of small marks, each of which is down to the metal and is rusted.

Is there a way to fix this without getting a new paint job? Any price estimates?
I also have a problem with my clear coat peeling of on other parts of the car - which brings up my second question. Please bear with me as I have NO experience / knowledge of paint / body work... but can the clear coat be buffed off and re-sprayed w/o having to paint the car?

Given both problem would it be most economical to touch of the paint from the tire and get the car re-cleared (if possible).

Thanks guy, sorry I'm such a paint noob

The small panel on the bottom exploded when the tire blew, so I bought this one from a part out car, the paint matches nicely.... now I just need to address the hideous paint scratch.

yeah and especially since your clear is going as well? you should just get the whole car done before it gets worse... the rust is already there!

A agree with everyone, you'll need a new paint job. Anything else will look crappy IMHO.

if u really want, u can hit it with some POR-15 then get some touch up paint and cover it over. but since PDW (or DPW?) yellows over time it will still stick out.

I'm getting quoted $3,000+ for a re-paint / clear. I couldn't justify that on a car worth no more than $3,500-$4k.

That sounds about in line with a good quality full paint job. If you don't want to pay that kind of price, try checking out body shops that deal with a lot of volume insurance jobs. They are often a little cheaper. I think you should be able to find someone to do it for around $2000. Otherwise you might have to settle for a Maaco paint job if you don't want to pay a few thousand for a good paint job.

I would suggest a full paint job as you have enough damage to areas of your car where you need a base coat anyway, and simply doing a reclear wont be much cheaper anyway since the prep work would be basically the same. At that point you are now just paying for the extra materials if you go with a full paint job.
