Single stage is what you get at your standard Maaco/Service King "Complete Repaints" for $149 and up. Useful if you are stealing and selling...not for a longevity paint job...No Clearcoat.

Only a small precentage of oem paint ( all makes) are single stage, most are basecoat/ clearcoat.

FWIW, it's all the same chemically, both types are urethane enamel. The only difference in clearecoat is that it's UNPIGMENTED urethane enamel.

So your topcoat either way is the same kind of paint.

...hope that helps.

If you are going after a repaint you probably want the same color and type of paint job as the original factory paint. Assuming you are talking about a white 1992 SC300 then that paint is indeed a single stage paint. I actually prefer the look if single stage paints in solid colors and find them much easier to keep looking good. Modern SS paints are every bit as good as the BC+CC counterparts, IMO, especially white. White paint uses titanium oxide as it's pigment which forms a very hard surface.

I have a little experience. I've help my cousins who own bodyshops, and i've painted two of my other cars before. It's just that i've never worked with single stage, and that's why I went with what I know.
