Default How would you approach this?

How would I get this off? 10 years and I have never seen anything like this. Its rust from the liscense plate bracket ON the paint. I rub it and most of it comes off, but how do i get this off without scrubbing the paint? im thinking ultimate compound...

thoughts?

I think you're going to need to sand it and compound.

ugh, that sux! I would probably try something like pro polish or another chemical cleaner first.. see what it'll remove. Personally, i'd take the same approach as w/ paint.. the least abrasive method that'll remove it is the way to go. I just dont know off the top of my head how you can remove that easily w/o applying some pressure to it.

WTF? Poor Durango...

But anyways, I too concur with sand + compound. May I ask who owns that vehicle?

A woman I have known for years, and who only recently warmed to the idea of paying me a substantial amount of money to do something she deems unnecessary. It has 56,000 miles on it, and its BAD, i mean, its gonna take at least 2 days. If I get it done tomorrow, it would be a miracle.

Its been up here in the frigid salty north for 3 years now...and its NEVER BEEN WASHED.

I'd use a cleaner/wax or a polish. It will come off easily with a PC. You could even mix up some Iron-Out and moisten a paper towel and lay it over the area.

If it comes off by scrubbing with hand? Why polish or compound at all. A good clay job will definitely remove it. I've removed plenty of rust stains (obviously not as large as this but the same color and everything) with just clay. Compound would be overkill to start out with if something less abrasive works.
