Chamois?

I use Bounty, the quicker picker upper. Then I lay them out to dry, and I use them again later when I do oil changes. So, I'm not wasting the paper towels just to dry the car. I haven't noticed any ill effect.
Although, I really should try a chamois/mf instead, to "save" on material, but then I use up cleaning material instead to clean the things.

Waffle-weave MF works so much better than a chamois, IMO. I have several new chamois still in the packages as I gave up on them a few years ago. They are quite expensive oil-tanned hides and require periodic re-oiling to remain soft. They don't absorb as much water and leave visible micro-droplets on the paint. A WWMF, on the other hand, removes nearly all the water even as they are wet. They wring out easier and are gentler on the paint. A new chamois, or a re-oiled chamois, initially leave behind an oil film and must be repeatedly washed prior to using.

I thought all synthetic chamoises were pretty much equal as far as quality/absorbability were concerned, until I bought an "Absorber". The synthetic chamois I had been using before it was thick and rubbery feeling and didn't absorb all that well while the Absorber is thinner, feels more like a real chamois, and drinks up water like a severely dehydrated camel !!

On scratching your paint up with paper towels. Switch to something intended for automotive paint.
If your car is clean from just being washed you will rarely need to wash your drying towels. When you do you only use a tiny amount of cleaners so that it will not affect the performance of the towel or the paint it is used on. Time to switch.
