How to safely clean headliner??

I have a couple smudge marks on my interior headliner. Is it safe to use a carpet cleaner and then lightly rub it out with a wet rag? I hesitate to do this because the headliners always seem so fragile to me. I would guess they could be ripped rather easily. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would recommend cleaning your headliner using
1) An A.P.C. cleaner such as a Meguiars A.P.C. plus....follow dilution chart
2) Steam clean
If you go with the APC plus, dilute in a spray bottle and make sure you have a good quality spayer. With a fine mist, lightly spray headliner and follow up wiping area using a Micro Fiber towel. DO NOT SATURATE!

agreed. I would go w/ an all purpose cleaner like Meguiars APC (dilute to your liking if you want). Spray on to a microfiber towel first. You never want to soak a headliner by spraying a lot directly on to it and possibly risk loosening the glue holding it in place. Then just gently wipe the affected areas.

Rather than "wiping", I would first try blotting, and move to wiping if more aggitation is needed. There is the possability of deteriating the nap of the headliner if it is a velour type material. Wiping works best for me if you use short strokes, and a lifting motion, while turning the towel to a clean area every time for the first few wipes, to ensure you don't just spread out the dirt to a larger area.
Just my experience, and I can't say I have much of it with headliners, but I do have a little.

Food for thought... If you have cloth seats or cloth interior parts, and you get some oil, grease, grime, or something of that nature, you can simply spray some carburator cleaner or brake cleaner on it. It dissolves it quickly.. Its freaking amazing! No wiping or nothing, because it dissolves. If you plan on doing this, use it moderately, and go easy with it. Lastly, DO NOT wet the area first with a "all purpose cleaner". The cleaner doesnt work as well if its wet, better if dry! Try it in your carpet, or floor mat, I promise you want use nothing else! Let us know how it works for you!

Ok I ended up using a carpet cleaner called Tough Stuff. I was careful not to saturate the headliner and i used short lifting strokes like you guys recommended. It worked great and my smudges are gone. Thanks!
