Default chrome polish cloth turns black?

I used regular car polish to buff a small piece of chrome.

the cloth turned black after some rubbing.

am I rubbing off the chrome? why did the cloth turn super black?

Actually, if it DIDN'T turn black, then you'd need to be cautious, because that would mean the wheels have a coating on them, and you sure wouldn't want to cut through it. *Most* chrome is non-clearcoated though, and just the plating is your surface.

What you're seeing is a chemical reaction between the polish and bare metal, and it's NORMAL.

I would only advise you to find the correct polish for the type wheel finish & metal you have because some abrasives in paint polish can dull your finished chrome and aluminum, depending on the grits. Chrome polish is pretty inexpensive, keep some around for occasions like this, if it is indeed chrome you're polishing up.

Best wishes,

Guitarman is correct. The metal surface you are polishing is a uncoated polished aluminum finish, not chrome (chrome is coated).

Like stated above, what you think is chrome is not chrome but instead high polished aluminum. This means your wheels over time will start to tarnish and need polishing to keep its shine.

Once you get it polished up, you'd be doing yourself a favor by applying a proper sealant. I have a 45' motorhome with 22.5 Alcoa uncoated aluminum wheels.... if I don't stay on top of them with polish and sealant, it takes 4-6 hours to polish them.

I'd never get the uncoated wheels again - that's for sure!

One of my favorite products for this is Nev-R-Dull, works really well and you dont have to worry about any liquid polish at all. just simply rub it on the surface mentioned and wipe away! PS. It will still turn black, this just means your actually doing something.

One can also use P21s Polishing Soap http://properautocare.com/p2poso.html

and Mother's or Meg's also.
