For headlights I always use clay first then something like Meguiars ScratchX. The rule of thumb is usually to least invasive to more invasive. If you don't have to take sandpaper to the headlight, why do it.

On clay,

OP, try using plain ol' DAWN dish soap, mixed with HOT water (hot as you can stand it). put the water in a spray bottle, then add the soap and shake 2 times, then spray and clay . The dawn acts as a cleaner to assist with the scrubbing. This is the ONLY time I will ever recommend dawn be used for anything other than dishes.

On the headlights: Meguairs PlastiX for the win.

I've never clay my car, not even sure I need it but does claying remove clear coat? Sounds like the way you're doing is very aggressive. Wouldn't it take of clear coat?

First off, if you are spending hours clay baring your car, you are doing it wrong.

HIGHLY recommended. Awesome lube and clay is really easy to use and does a good job.

If you want to speed it up some and conserve your energy for polishing and waxing..

and

Makes this a 30 minute job.

Yes It does, but I can do my whole car before it falls apart, and if you have to use more, use more. Its not like you re-use it anyway...or at least I hope you dont.

I use Megs Quik prep 1:1 with distilled h20, stretches the prep and makes a great lube, BONUS: Has a cinnamony? smell

I think I have just about every car detailing product sold by Griot's... I use their Speed Shine product every day and it's the best.

Claying doesn't remove any of the clear coat. With the lube, the clay simply glides across the surface of the paint and removed any stubborn brake dust, rail dust, etc. that isn't removed during normal washing.

If you run your hand across the paint before and after claying, you can feel a big difference in the smoothness. Claying just removed dust and other contaminants that are stuck to the paint, but doesn't actually do anything to the clear coat.

Polishing is the step where you are actively correcting your paint and removing small amounts of clear coat to lessen or remove scratches and swirl marks.
