Question Buffers and Pads

Well, I think I've decided on purchasing a Porter 7424... just don't have the extra coin for a Flex ... PLUS, I'm not sure the additional dollars are worth it.

That said, I noticed that the Porter comes with a 5" (hook and loop) backing plate and you can get 5 1/2" pads or 6 1/2" pads. Outside of the obvious size difference, can folks give me feedback as the the pro's and con's of the different sizes? (I'm planning on getting a few different pads to accommodate light scratch removal and wax / sealant application....)

Thanks for any advice folks can provide!

go for the 5.5" pads. the bigger pads on the pc7424xp might not be able to generate as much heat to remove swirlmarks and scratches.

that's just my opinion, others can chime in with their thoughts.

Yes, the 5.5" Lake Country Pads work great with that size backing plate.

5.5 or 6.5 work. Just refine your technique if it doesn't

The major difference with an orbital buffer is that smaller pads, especially the 4" pads give you more polishing power to remove swirls, oxidation, etc. With these pads I find it takes a little bit more time but it's worth it for the polishing steps. The 6.5" is what I use to apply almost all glazes, sealants and liquid waxes. It applies a little easier and at times the 6.5" helps you get into some nooks that the 4" struggles with (sometimes it's the opposite).

Here are just a few kits that may best suit your needs:
DI Packages Porter Cable 7424XP 4" Basic Kit
DI Packages Porter Cable 7424XP 5.5" Starter Kit
DI Packages Porter Cable 7424XP 6.5" Basic Kit
DI Packages Porter Cable 7424XP, Meguiar's Polishes and Hydro Pads Starter Kit

With all of our kits you can get any pad combination by listing your preferred pads in the comment section while checking out. Let me know if you have any questions.
