Default Need serious exhaust cleaning

My car has been running rich for awhile now and as a result I have black soot all over the inside and outside of my exhaust. It was once polished and pretty but now it is in need of a serious cleaning. Is there a product that can bring it back to show shine status on do I need a new exhaust?

Use degreaser to remove top layer of soot then go to town with mothers metal polish.

That looks pretty bad. Its definitely going to take some man hours to get that back to show quality shine. It IS possible though.

First use a highly concentrated degreaser to get rid of the dirt and grime on the exhaust. Personally id use Chemical Guys Grime Reaper as its one of the strongest degreasers on the market.

After that you should post more pictures so we can see whats underneath all that grime and tell you where to go next.

Just to get you on your way id say use Optimum Metal Polish applied with either a foam applicator (not too bad after degreasing) or possibly #0000 steel wool if its REALLY bad.

Hope this helps!

Progress report...

I bought the products indicated, Grime Reaper and the polish. Here are some pics of the exhaust before I got started.

After a quick wash and rinse with the Grime Reaper here is a comparison which shows the difference.

After cleaning for a few days I have moved on to polishing. I am doing it by hand and by using my orbital buffer with a terry cloth for buffing.

It is looking a lot better but there are these spots on the tips. Will they go away if I continue to buff or do I need another product to get rid of the spots, Thanks for all of you help so far.

I thought steel wool would scratch it up? Any particular kind or grade of steel wool I need to use?

#0000 fine grade steel wool.

Steel wool sometimes leaves marks depending on the finish but sometimes it doesnt leave any and makes it a mirror finish like on the mufflers.

Steel wool does not seem to be working on the exhaust tips. Overall the exhaust looks great and I am very happy with the cleaning process. Perhaps the tips just need to be dipped again? Its almost like the heat has had an effect on the color of the metal.
