Default Rust removal prior to touchup?

I've done some searching but didn't find a great answer to this question..

I have a couple of decent-sized paint chips on my black 2005 LS430 hood that are down to the metal. I've left them untreated long enough that I see some rust on them, and before winter comes I want to get them covered.

How do I effectively treat / remove the rust prior to applying touchup?

I think I have some Langka in the house that I'll use for the touchup, or possibly use Picus' approach in the thread below.

Thanks

The way I did it was take a q-tip and dip it in rubbing alcohol and then clean out the chip as best I can. If there is still some rust on the metal I would super clue a hole punched piece of 2000 grit sandpaper to the back of a pencil erasure and try to sand the remaining rust off. Afterward I clean it and add some kind of rust treatment lubricant to the chip but you will need to thoroughly clean the rust treatment off the chip with rubbing alcohol before you apply the touch up paint because the paint or primer/paint generally will not adhere if there is rust preventative residue on the chip.

Hit it with a 36 grit disc on grinder and cover it up with Rustoleum

NAPA sells sanding pen. Basically a pen with abrasive tip.

Thumbs up

X 3. I keep a couple of those around for this exact thing. When I used to do chips on a fairly regular basis, it was a lifesaver. Much easier than other methods, and I concur on removing any residue before touching up.

I haven't done this yet, but was talking about it to a buddy who recently was using Langka on his Porsche and he had one of the fiberglass pencils similar to that pictured above that he loaned me.

He collects Rolex watches and normally uses it to get scratches out of the bands - so you might find it in other places than for auto detailing.

Now just need it to stay sunny and get a bit warmer before I do the touch up!
