1998 Black Lexus GS
does the 1998 black Lexus GS have clearcoat?
someone told me that it does and someonelse said that it does not, that clearcoat started in 1999.

I think this topic was argued in a past post, to the conclusion that it does not have clearcoat.
It's easy enough to find out. Take a white cotton towel, and rub some swirl remover or cleaner-wax on the car. If you see black paint on the rag=no clear. If it's just slightly dirty but not black=clear.

Neither Does the 1999
Ted - My 1999 GS4 doesn't have a clear coat so maybe Lexus started in 2000?
Guitar's method works well but I wet sanded the stock side skirts once I had them off ( replaced by a set of L-Sportline skirts ) just to verify things. Didn't take me long to get a milky residue which was the clear coat being sanded off so I'm sure that the rest of the car's NOT cleared as well.
