Orbital for a newb?

If you can purchase the GG machine, it will surely be the better long term solution.

I've got a Rupes LHR21, LHR15, LHR75, and GG....... I still find the GG to be a very useful tool to have. For a DIYer, it is certainly all that is needed IMO.

I have no experience with it, so I cannot comment.
Given it's small throw, I don't see the advantages over something like a Griot's machine... but again, since I have never used it I can't provide any real feedback.

I agree with everything Zach said in the second post.
From my experience, M100 is much easier to use than M105. M105 performs very well, but can throw a lot of dust, which causes more clean up time.
I normally use Lake Country 6.5" pads instead of 5.5", but both work more than well enough for us DIY'ers.
