Default Repair advise

If this is in the wrong place, feel free to move it. I bought my car on 1/16 so that someone could back into me on 1/22. Per usual, they left and now I have a 3-4 inch crack in the plastic bumper under the grill. It goes "to the edge" as the collision center guy stated. They are telling me they can repair it, but the work won't be guaranteed as it could re-crack. OR obviously they can replace the whole bumper. Anyone have experience with a repaired crack in the bumper? TIA

What is the price difference in repair vs. replace?

They estimated $700 to repair it and at least $1200 to replace it. If I replace it, I'll have to turn it into my insurance. $500 deductible.

$1200 for a bumper replacement seems very steep... for instance, my wife accidentally bumped into a new RX350 earlier this year and their bumper replacement including labor was $650.

A bumper on most cars can be found for $200-$400, and paint will run $200-$300 in my experience.

What vehicle is it?

an OEM bumper is $317.82 + shipping with your clublexus discount on MyLParts.com... you could have it painted and install it yourself and save some money.

You could also find a replacement bumper cheaper on eBay.
New eBay Bumper - $195 shipped

Plenty of ways to save money... just have to be willing to do some research and work

I will not be installing anything myself, lol. I put gas in my cars myself and that's it.

Can I order it and have a shop paint and install it? Thanks for your help. I've never had to have body work done on a car before. I appreciate it.

Yes, you can order parts and have the shop paint them. You can also see if the shop will order the parts you want from the supplier you want so you don't have to worry about transporting them... the only catch here is you will be 100% liable for ensuring you're ordering the right parts. If they don't fit, it'll be your fault.

Also, installing a bumper is typically very easy. On the IS it is as simple as removing ~10 bolts, popping out some plastic tabs, and pulling the bumper off. Takes 20 minutes. Never too late to learn, but if you're uncomfortable doing it don't let the shop charge you hours of labor for the removal and installation.

So I just got estimates in writing.

REPARE: 8.4 hours of body labor + 4 hours paint labor + 4 hours of paint supplies.
TOTAL: $853.92

REPLACE. Bumper cost $435.97+ 2.4 hours of body labor + 5.1 hours of paint labor + 5.1 hours of paint supplies.
Total: $1090.93

Those estimates don't sound far off.

When I had the front bumper cover on my Tacoma replaced it was right around $900. When my rear bumper cover on my RX had to be replaced, it was around $1900, but that included two new parking sensors.

If this happened to me I would repair it myself. My z loves eating shredded tires on fwy. Repaired and repainted cracked bumper myself for total cost of $250. But looks like you probably have to pay dearly to get it done at a shop. You can try junkyard bumper. You might get lucky and get one with same color
