Default Cleaning headliner

I hade the misfortune of trying to clean up my brother-in-law's car for my sister this past weekend. I don't know how you professional detailers deal with the frustration of investing time and effort into getting a car in shape, knowing it's so bad it will never look good, and that it will be in the same condition again in 6 months. OK, I'm done griping.

There were two things I've never had to clean before, and I realized I have no idea how to approach them. How do you clean headliners and seat belts? Both were gross. I tried soap and water on the belts, and it didn't touch them. I tried 303 cleaner with similar results. Nothing worked. I was afraid to mess with the headliner, because I didn't want to damage it even though you could actually see the grime of 10 years of total neglect.

Any ideas?

Seat belts can be difficult to clean. I would use a true fabric cleaner and some scrubbing and see if your results are any better.

A steam cleaner should do a great job on a gunky seat belt. (A steam cleaner is one of the best car cleaning tools ever!) It should also work on a headliner BUT if you get the headliner too hot it will delaminate... so be careful!
