Default Vinyl Removal Help

I learned the other day, that a black vinyl was installed on the chrome trim of my ISF by the previous owner. Its been many years, and the vinyl is pretty much baked itself onto the trim, but it's chipping.. so i want to get this removed.

I tried heating the vinyl with a hair dryer, but It doesn't break off as one piece. It's breaking off in segments. And there is still a glue residue from where the vinyl separates. Furthermore, the vinyl is hooked to the back of the trim piece and its ripping at the seams (where the chrome meats the window gasket trim). Any ideas on how to get this out??

What do you think a professional will charge to remove this?

Your best bet is to call around some local bodyshops or vinyl/ppf/tint installers. They should be able to give yo a rough ball park on price if you text them these pics.

Pricing will vary based on where you are in the US. I highly doubt the vinyl is actually wrapped all the way under the trim. If it is, that means the trim was removed to do the job and to remove it completely you'd have to take the trim off again. Our vinyl guy at work always does the trim on the car in a fairly short amount of time. Never heard of trim being removed to wrap it, at that point you might as well just paint it if going through the trouble of taking it all apart.

That wasn't wrapped by the previous owner it is actually how it is supposed to be. The trim peeling off like that is a big issue on the 2IS in general, both of the ones I owned had the issue. The only way i would fix it is buy new window trim and replace it.

No, these pieces are (fake) chrome from the factory. If it is black, it was certainly wrapped, painted, or plastidipped.

Just looks like old failing vinyl... going to be a PITA to remove.

I was going to suggest a heat gun, but you have the window rubber trim so close. Tape the paint, possibly a product like Google Gone or a safe bug and tar, adhesive remover. Along with your hair dryer, a plastic scraper, and let the stuff soak in. I know Never Dull works wonders, I'd if it would start taking it off at a reasonable where it's already chrome.

Even old subarus have that sort of stupidity from the factory. Painting over shiny chrome or stainless trim, that should be a life time warranty fix to cover just plain stupidity.

Any idea on how to remove this trim piece? I think when I get it off, it'll be a lot easier to remove/clean.

I believe it is quite an extensive process.... I remember stumbling upon the process when reading about window tinters damaging that rubber seal on that piece of trim. You can find the info in the IS-F Forum somewhere.

If I remember correctly it just slides off to the side and up it's held on by metal clips I've taken them off a couple times before on a few cars. If you put the window down it should be easier to see what your working with.

as you can see in this picture the trim on the back door is startig to fail as well, this is a picture from my previous IS350 I owned and it's a huge issue especially if you live in a hot climate. My friend who bought my car off of me ended up doing the same thing as you're trying to do he just peeled it off and he said it took forever because it just kept flaking off little by little.
