Looking at a new car. Used...but came across this mark on the fender. I tried to rub it off with saliva (only thing I had at the time lol) and it wouldn’t clear off. It feels smooth to the touch. Is this something I can buff off with a compound?

For the most part it should buff out, unless it's bird-poop or other environmental fallout etching that's damaged the clear coat. Ask the dealer to have their detail guys come out with a foam applicator and some all in one polish,,, see if that works...

Likely bird poop that sat for a bit. Did the texture feel different from the surrounding area at all? Most likely nothing a little polishing compound can't take out. If needed, there's always the option to up it a level and go with a rubbing compound or wet sand, but always start with the least aggressive options available. Definitely wouldn't let that hold me back from purchasing a car.

didn't feel different. felt smooth. I bought the car so I’ll try some mild rubbing compound then progress further to wet sand if needed.

Congrats on the new car! And yeah, definitely give it a shot and let us know what happens. Another thing that crossed my mind is really, really old tree sap... Sometimes that stuff will get on a car, and if left alone it can creep its way into all the microscopic crevices of the paint, which will leave a very fine, film-like layer. Good luck.

Just an update. Used Maguire's MIrror Glaze (didn't even have to use a harsh compound) and it worked!
