Headlight restoration plan?

Headlight restoration plan?
I've seen enough Youtube videos and read enough articles to feel comfortable refinishing faded and yellow headlights. The part I'm not so hot on is either leaving the plastic without a permanent protection coat and keeping up with constant care with ceramic or wax coating -OR- spraying the headlight with a gloss clear coat. Both have their pluses and minuses I guess.
Here's my thought- Do all the work to sand down to a clean, clear and scratch free surface (as clear as can be made), then put a clear vinyl protector over the surface. My thought is this prevents having to do both the constant upkeep of not spraying clear AND dealing with orange peel clear and eventual breakdown of the cheap clears available out there. Every few years one could just apply a new vinyl protector on the headlight. Plus, I would think this helps protect against rock chips and other kinds of permanent damage.
Am I missing something?

Clear film works to prevent oxidation it's a good solution.

I use the Sylvannia Headlight restoration kit with great results. After using a couple other restoration products in the past, I found the Sylvannia product to be the best. Also, they have a very good video on YouTube with detailed step-by-step instructions.
as for maintaining the headlights, I use Meguiar’s Headlight Coating for maintenance which is supposed to last a year between applications.
