My LS400 Rebuilt Project. Lots of pics.

This is pretty awesome stuff. I always wondered if rebuilding an LS400 engine is even worth it, because there is no way you can match the original factory tolerances, and those tolerances are the essence of the LS!

It's worth to rebuild it, if you intend to keep it. You can always match factory tolerances or even better, depending on what application that you'll run this engine for. Remember that factory engines have most parts that are machine built and assembled that can't be controlled precisely, while rebuilding it by hands with the right tools can give you more precision and control on it. There's a lot of stuffs that can always be improved from any factory engines.

sorry to butt in but steve would you mind sharing some of the deficiencies youve found on your personal experiences with the 1uz? Ive always thought it was near flawless but i dont have the hands on time or experience you do. please share if you dont mind

The first thing is stock exhaust headers. If you take them out, you'll them built with restriction, especially the last runner (near the fire wall) that flows against the other 3 runners. The next thing would be the heads and intake manifolds. The surfaces are rough with casting marks that will create air turbulence and slow down the flow. Those are just a few examples. If they can be improved from the factory, then there'll be more power to be gain without causing any damage to the engine overall.

Apologies if you are directly mentioning the headers of the 1uz from the LS.

Not to poke in, but are you referencing the stock exhaust headers of the 1uz from an SC or from an LS? If I recall, they are completely different and the LS headers flow far better than that of an SC.
